Why convert JPG to PNG?
PNG is a lossless format, so saving or editing the file repeatedly won't add more compression artefacts. That makes PNG the better choice when you plan to edit an image further, add text or overlays, or need pixel-perfect graphics for design work. Some upload forms and editing apps also only accept PNG.
Note that converting JPG to PNG won't restore detail that JPEG compression already removed, and PNG files are usually larger. If you only need a smaller file, try the Image Compressor instead.
Frequently asked questions
Will converting JPG to PNG add transparency?
No. A JPG has no transparency, so the PNG will have the same solid background. To make the background transparent, use our Background Remover.
Why is the PNG larger than my JPG?
PNG uses lossless compression, which keeps every pixel exactly and therefore needs more space than JPEG's lossy compression.
Is it free to convert JPG to PNG?
Yes, completely free with no limits.
