How to use the YouTube Thumbnail Resizer

  1. Upload your image. The size is set to 1280×720 automatically.
  2. Pick "Crop to fill" for a full-bleed thumbnail, or "Fit inside" to keep the whole image.
  3. Choose JPG for the smallest file and download.
  4. In YouTube Studio, open your video's details and upload it as a custom thumbnail.

YouTube thumbnail requirements

YouTube recommends 1280×720 pixels (minimum width 640 px) in a 16:9 aspect ratio, saved as JPG, PNG or GIF and under 2 MB. The same 16:9 thumbnail is used everywhere: search results, suggested videos, TVs and phones.

If your design was made at a different size, for example a square Canva graphic or a 4:3 screenshot, this tool crops or pads it to 16:9 so it doesn't get stretched.

Tips for clickable thumbnails

Use large, bold text of no more than 3–5 words, a close-up face with a clear expression, and strong contrast. Check that it still reads well at small sizes, because most people see thumbnails on a phone. Avoid putting important details in the bottom-right corner, where YouTube shows the video length.
